What is a Utah CFP and why do I want one?

CFP is Concealed Firearm Permit. It is the Utah equivalent of the Texas Concealed Handgun License. You might want to add the Utah CFP to your Texas CHL because Utah has reciprocity with 4 states that Texas does not – Washington, Minnesota, Ohio, and West Virginia. If it is important to you to be legal to carry in those states, then the Utah CFP is a good option.

The Utah permit is also a good backup in the event that you lose your wallet. Keep the Utah permit at home, and you will have a backup photo ID to help you replace your lost items. You will still be legal to carry while waiting on your replacement Texas CHL., if you have the Utah CFP

I am a Texas resident. Can I legally carry in Texas with a Utah CFP if I don’t have a Texas CHL?

Yes. Texas recognizes the validity of the Utah non-resident permit. You are not required to get a Texas license to legally carry in Texas.

Why would I get a Texas CHL if I can get the Utah permit for less money?

There are a few disadvantages to a non-resident permit.

First, you will not be legal to carry in states that do not recognize a non-resident permit. (Florida, Colorado, New Hampshire)

You will not be able to bypass the instant background check when you buy a firearm from a licensed dealer.

You do not have benefit of the exemption from the federal “gun-free school zone” law that a resident permit holder has.

How do I get a Utah CFP?

Utah requires a class given by a Utah certified instructor. We are Utah certified, and our Texas CHL class meets all the requirements for the Utah CFP. You can take the Texas CHL class and get either, or both, permits. We also provide the application, passport photo, fingerprints, and notary. All you need is a copy of your driver’s license and the application fee of $65.25
